FAQ
Does this tool use eval?
No. The Python snippet uses ast parsing, and the TypeScript snippet uses tokenization + shunting-yard to avoid eval/Function.
What operators are supported?
Numbers, parentheses, +, -, *, /, and exponent (**). Unary minus is supported.
Can I type ^ for exponent?
Yes—enable “Treat ^ as exponent” to normalize ^ into ** before evaluation.
Are constants like pi and e supported?
Yes if you enable constants. Python accepts pi/e; TypeScript maps them to Math.PI/Math.E.
Is this safe to expose to untrusted users?
It blocks function calls and variables, but you should still apply rate limits and input length limits in production.
How do I use the tool with an agent?
Add the generated tool to your agent’s tool list; the snippet includes a small direct invoke test to confirm it works.
Why is my agent not calling the calculator tool?
Usually the tool description is too vague or the model isn’t prompted to use tools—make the description explicit and include examples in your system prompt.
