FAQ

How does this word checker count words?

It matches word-like tokens in your text and counts them, with options for treating hyphens and contractions as part of a single word.

Do hyphenated words count as one word or multiple?

By default, hyphenated terms like “state-of-the-art” count as one word; disable the option to count each part separately.

Does it count contractions like “don’t” as one word?

Yes by default. Turn off the contractions option if you prefer “don” and “t” to count separately.

What’s the difference between characters with and without spaces?

“With spaces” counts every character in the input, while “no spaces” removes whitespace (spaces, tabs, newlines) before counting.

How are sentences and paragraphs counted?

Sentences are estimated by splitting on . ! ? boundaries, and paragraphs are separated by blank lines.

Can I exclude numbers from the word count?

Yes—enable “Exclude numbers” to ignore purely numeric tokens like 123.

Is my text sent to a server?

No. The counts are computed locally in your browser with no network requests.
