FAQ
Does this VAT checker confirm a business is VAT-registered?
No. This tool validates format and checksum locally; it can’t confirm live registration status.
What GB VAT number formats are supported?
Standard GB VAT numbers are 9 digits, optionally followed by a 3-digit branch suffix (12 digits total), plus special GD### and HA### patterns.
Can I enter VAT numbers with spaces or hyphens?
Yes. The tool removes common separators and normalizes the value (e.g., “GB 999 9999 73” → “GB999999973”).
What’s the difference between GB and XI?
GB is Great Britain. XI is used for Northern Ireland VAT in certain EU contexts; use the UK (GB/XI) tool for XI numbers.
What are GD and HA VAT numbers?
They are special UK VAT identifiers: GD000–GD499 for government departments and HA500–HA999 for health authorities.
Why does a 12-digit VAT number still use a 9-digit checksum?
The checksum applies to the first 9 digits; the last 3 digits are typically a branch identifier.
Why is my number marked invalid even though it looks correct?
Common reasons are a wrong prefix (e.g., XI/UK), wrong length, or checksum mismatch caused by a typo.
